John 14:15–27 and Galatians 5:13–26

Jesus did not promise his followers an easy life, but he promised they would not face it alone. God gives the Holy Spirit to everyone who belongs to Christ.

The Holy Spirit is not an impersonal force. He is God present with and within his people. He points us to Jesus, helps us understand truth, assures us that we belong to God, convicts us of sin, gives power to serve and gradually forms the character of Jesus in us.

You may notice immediate changes after trusting Christ, while other patterns take time to transform. Spiritual growth involves active dependence: we turn away from what resists God and choose to follow the Spirit's leading.

Galatians describes the Spirit's fruit as love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. These qualities are more reliable signs of spiritual maturity than excitement, gifting or outward appearance.

Ask the Spirit to fill and guide you each day. Test thoughts and experiences by Scripture, look for the character of Jesus, and remain accountable within Christian community. The Holy Spirit will never lead you in a way that contradicts God's revealed truth.

• Which aspect of the Spirit's fruit do I most need God to develop?
• Where am I relying only on willpower?
• Is there an attitude or practice the Spirit is prompting me to leave behind?

“Holy Spirit, thank you for living in God's people. Make Jesus real to me, guide me in truth and form his character in my life. Give me strength to obey today. Amen.”
