Why You Need a Church Family

Why You Need a Church Family

Following Jesus is personal, but it was never intended to be lived alone.

Read

Acts 2:38–47 and Hebrews 10:19–25

When God brings us to Jesus, he also brings us into a people. The church is not primarily a building or weekly event. It is the community of those who belong to Christ.

No church is perfect. Every congregation is made of imperfect people who need grace. Yet isolation leaves us without many of the gifts God provides through others: teaching, encouragement, correction, shared worship, friendship, service and care during suffering.

A healthy church will keep Jesus and the gospel central, teach Scripture responsibly, practise prayer and loving community, and have accountable leaders. It should take sin seriously without hiding abuse or using fear to control people. Questions should be welcomed, vulnerable people protected and money handled transparently.

Ask a mature Christian to recommend a congregation. Attend more than once before drawing conclusions. Speak with a leader about the church's beliefs, baptism, membership and ways to build relationships.

Church involvement is not only about what you receive. God has given you experiences, abilities and opportunities that can bless others. In time, you will learn to serve as well as be served.

If you have been wounded by a church, your caution may be understandable. Healing should not be rushed, and serious wrongdoing should not be excused. Seek wise, safe support while remembering that the failures of Christians do not change the character of Jesus.

Reflect

  • What hopes or fears do I have about church?
  • What signs of a healthy community should I look for?
  • Who could help me take this step safely?

Pray

“Jesus, lead me to a healthy community where I can know you, be known and grow with others. Help me receive care and learn to serve. Amen.”
